Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition
|
In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the important role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has responded to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year.
The theme of IMD 2019 will focus on “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition”. The role of museums in society is changing. Museums keep reinventing themselves in their quest for becoming more interactive, audience-focused, community-oriented, flexible, adaptable and mobile agencies. They have become cultural hubs functioning as platforms where creativity combines with knowledge and where visitors can also co-create, share and interact.
While preserving their primary missions – collecting, conservation, communication, research, exhibition – museums have transformed their practices to remain closer to the communities they serve. Today they look for innovative ways to tackle contemporary social issues and conflict. By acting locally, museums can also advocate and mitigate global problems, striving to meet the challenges of today’s society proactively. As institutions at the heart of society, museums have the power to establish dialogue between cultures, to build bridges for a peaceful world and to define a sustainable future.
As museums increasingly grow into their roles as cultural hubs, they are also finding new ways to honour their collections, their histories and their legacies, creating traditions that will have new meaning for future generations and relevance for an increasingly diverse contemporary audience at a global level. This transformation, which will have a profound impact on museum theory and practice, also forces us to rethink the value of museums and to question the ethical boundaries that define the very nature of our work as museum professionals.
At once a focal point for the community and an integral part of a global network, museums offer a platform for translating local communities’ needs and views into a global context.
This year, IMD in Hong Kong is scheduled on 18-19 May 2019. Over these two days, visitors will be admitted free* to most of the local participating venues, where a wide range of educational and entertaining programmes will be held. Come and be inspired!
To echo with this international event, Dr and Mrs Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine with free admission will open to public on 18 and 19 May 2019.

Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Publics
|
In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the important role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has responded to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year.
The theme of IMD 2018 is “Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Publics”. With the constant advances in information technology, our communications and connections with one another become more complex and diverse every day. Museums are an inherent part of our local communities, cultural landscape and natural environment, so they are also committed to following the current trends. In order to enhance the public’s understanding of, and connection with, museums, they have to develop new approaches in interpreting their exhibits, and explore new opportunities through social media to enrich the audience’s viewing experience. These new approaches will allow audiences to interact with the exhibits and with each other. However, not all these new connections are due to technology. As museums strive to maintain their relevance in society, they also make an effort to organise cooperative projects focusing on the local community and different social groups to engage new audiences and strengthen connections with them.
This year, IMD in Hong Kong is scheduled for 12-13 May 2018. Over these two days, visitors will be admitted free to most of the local participating venues, where a wide range of educational and entertaining programmes will be held. Come and be inspired!
To echo with this international event, Dr and Mrs Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine with free admission will open to public on 12 and 13 May 2018.

Museums and Cultural Landscapes
|
Back in 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has responded to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year.
The theme of the 2016 event is ‘Museums and Cultural Landscapes’. Cultural landscapes are properties of human culture which, interweaving nature and history, represent the ‘combined products of nature and of man’. Closely associated with our life and the society to which we belong, cultural landscapes are constantly changing. Museums have always conducted work on their collections, research, exhibitions and education. Under the growing influence of current trends, museums can today no longer merely focus on their collections: they need to go beyond their traditional boundaries and take responsibility for conserving the surrounding environment in the society in which they operate. Only then can they undertake a more active and significant role in the issues involved in facilitating the protection of cultural landscapes.
This year, International Museum Day in Hong Kong is scheduled for 14-15 May 2016, and over those two days visitors will be admitted free to most of the local participating venues, where a wide range of educational and entertaining programmes will be held. Come and be inspired!

Museums for a sustainable society
|
Since 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has designated 18 May as the International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the role that museums play in the society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has echoed to this significant appeal since 2001 and keeps on organising IMD events in mid-May annually.
Acquisition, research, exhibition and education are the well-known core functions of museums. Apart from these functions, museums also play a key role in promoting new concepts and beliefs that are beneficial to our society.
“Museums for a sustainable society” is the theme of IMD 2015. Nowadays, people recognise that natural resources are limited so we should live sustainably and develop our society in a way that takes into consideration of what and how Mother Nature can cope. In order to develop towards a sustainable society, it requires new rationale and people need to adapt to new ways of living. Museums, in this transition, take a strong position.
This year, the International Museum Day, Hong Kong is scheduled on 16-17 May, 2015. During these two days, visitors will be admitted free to most of the local participating venues where a wide range of educational and entertaining programmes will be held. Come and be inspired!
To echo with this international event, Dr and Mrs Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine with free admission will open to public on 16 and 17 May 2015.

International Museum Day 2013, Hong Kong Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change
International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May of each year as the International Museum Day (IMD) in 1977. Since 2001, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has organised the International Museum Day, Hong Kong in mid-May every year with the aim of raising public awareness of the roles and functions of museums in society.
The role of museums in society changes with the times. Reconciling their traditional mission of conservation with the creativity necessary for their revival and the development of their audiences – this is the evolution that museums are trying to undertake, with the strong belief that their presence and actions can transform society constructively. The theme for IMD 2013 is "Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change". This truly optimistic theme in the form of an equation dynamically gathers several concepts that are essential to defining what a museum is today, highlighting the universal nature of those institutions and their positive influence on society. It summarises the complexity of museum tasks and emphasises that they are meant to contribute to the community with their passion and creativity.
To echo with this international event, Dr and Mrs Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine will organise a fantasic special programme「親子中醫針灸小學堂」 on 18 and 19 May 2013. Come to have fun! Please click the programme rundown and the application form (Chinese version only) for more details.

2012 International Museum Day: Museums in a Changing World: New challenges, new inspirations
Every year, museums around the world host International Museum Day (IMD) on or around 18 May, the date originally designated by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977 to celebrate the significant role played by these custodians of knowledge. Since 2001, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has organised an array of art, culture and museum extension activities in mid-May every year with the aim of raising public awareness about the roles and functions of museums in society.
Our world is changing faster than ever. New technology spreads new ideas, transmits gigabytes of information, delivers news of an increasingly unstable climate – swiftly, widely, virally. The theme for IMD 2012 is Museums in a Changing World: New challenges, new inspirations. Prompting visitors to reflect on the role of museums in our rapidly evolving society and this era of new media, IMD 2012 will focus on how museums are responding to the challenges of the future and creating the basis for their own sustainable development.
In this occasion, Dr & Mrs Hung Hin Shiu Museum of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University will hold special programmes on 19 and 20 May 2012. Come and join the fun!
